PA residents and PPL
If you are a PA resident & have PPL electric, then you will want to read this. As you know, starting in January 2010, PPL will be raising rates for customers upwards of 29%, plus $2.00 fee so that PPL can give rebates to those people who buy energy efficient items, such as windows, washers & dryers, etc.
Here is a website you will want to check out called PA Office of Consumer Advocate. Here is what they are about:
"The Office of Consumer Advocate (OCA) is a state agency that represents the interests of Pennsylvania utility consumers before the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), federal regulatory agencies, and state and federal courts. The OCA was created by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1976 and is an independent office within the Office of Attorney General."
Here, they list different companies and their rates, so that you can make a better decision for your utilities. It's worth looking over, even if you plan to stay with PPL. They also offer information for gas, water, & telephone as well!
Hopefully we will be seeing a bunch of offers in the paper or being sent to us as well!

Tuesday Treat Day
Being from Amish Country, I thought this would be an appropriate recipe to share. This is truly the best wet bottom shoofly pie we've ever had! And trust me, there is a lot of competition around here for the best!
This is a great pie to give away for housewarming or holidays because it stays longer than a regular pie if you wrap it correctly!
Enjoy!
Wet Bottom Shoofly Pie
Topping:
3/4 c. brown sugar 1 TBSP. Crisco
1 c. flour 1/8 tsp. salt
Bottom (filling):
1 c. water 1 large egg
1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 c. molasses (old barrel or turkey)
Mix flour, sugar and salt. Add crisco and mix thoroughly. Save 1/2 c. crumbs for the top of the pie. Bring water to a boil, add soda and stir in molasses. Cool slightly and add beaten egg. Stir Mix crumbs and liquid together Pour into unbaked pie shell and top with reserved crumbs.
Bake at 350 for 50-55 mins. Test with a cake tester.

Grocery Trip
I went to Darrenkamps last Thursday night for some last minute birthday ingredients. I didn't have time to take a picture, but I spent $24.01 for the following (total before card savings...$40.58, I didn't use any coupons):
1 whole chicken (on sale at $.79 lb)
1 block of cream cheese
1 loaf of whole wheat bread
5 lb bag of sugar
2-2 lb bags of 10x sugar
bananas
6 blocks of cheese (1 lb each)
1 gallon of skim milk
I did OK given that I couldn't use any coupons for any of the items I purchased. I wish I could have gotten a few more chickens, but being already over budget, I didn't want to spend the money since we have plenty of meat in our freezer already.
So here is the run down for this month (remember, my budget is $40 a week):
Week 1: $44.55
Week 2: $41.28
Week 3: $24.01
3 week total: $109.84 ($10.16 under budget)
I have $50.16 for the rest of the month!
